A unique ¿Cómo Vives? experience

There is nothing more rewarding than to finish a project in the community with such a positive outcome. ¿Cómo Vives? is my favorite Artpace program and I always look forward to that experience. Through ¿Cómo Vives? we work with students from different schools, after school programs, and youth organizations.

The program this Spring in partnership with the Bexar County Family Justice Center was truly special.

An area of the unique ¿Cómo Vives? project.

This was a little different than previous “¿Cómo Vives? programs that traditionally paired two organizations together through sharing responses to art at Artpace. At Bexar County Family Justice Center, the collaboration came from different children walking into the waiting area with their parents and creating art while they waited for their appointments. We decided to use the window area of the waiting room at the center to create a collaborative window installation inspired by Tony Feher, using blue painters tape to design different free-form patterns and shapes.

It was great to see the parents engage and contribute to the project as well. The staff at Bexar County Family Justice Center were so supportive and were inspired by our work and our presence too.

The finished product: A beautiful landscape of interconnected designs. Photo by Ernesto Olivo.

The most important thing was to create a safe space for the youth and their families and to create the feel of a positive environment overall. The end result was a beautiful landscape of interconnected designs and works that ultimately created one beautiful piece of art.
