Based in New York City, Joan Bankemper was born in Covington, Kentucky in 1959. Bankemper holds a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including commissions at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York; Creative Time’s Art in the Anchorage, New York; Maria Cilena Galeria, Milan, Italy; and White Columns, New York. In 1997 the artist rebuilt a 12th Century monastic garden in Palermo, Italy.
