Our resident DJs JJ Lopez and Leonard Trujillo turned the rooftop into a dance floor for hundreds of our friends, alumni artists, and new members, while one of our favorite downtown Artpace Alliance members, Ocho, hosted a BYOB (Build Your Own Beverage) Workshop for our guests. Expert mixologists from Hotel Havana‘s chic River Walk bar shared mixers made from scratch and reinvented old-school recipes to help members craft their own refreshing cocktails.

Local filmmaker Jaime Sanchez was kind enough to shoot and edit a very cool video short of the evening. Enjoy!

On November 21, following the opening of their exhibitions at Artpace, our 11.3 IAIR artists Frank Benson (New York, New York), Graham Fagen (Glasgow, Scotland), and Jeff Williams (Austin, Texas) celebrated their new work with guest curator Russell Ferguson—along with the artists’ personal guests, Artpace donors, and Board of Directors members, as well as quite a few Fresh Art First members, who enjoyed the behind-the-scenes party with us.

There was a nice sort of magic to the evening, captured beautifully by photographer Francisco Cortes, who has shared a selection of shots from the post-opening dinner on his blog.

Special thanks to Artpace patron James Lifshutz for hosting this lovely soirée.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s nearly showtime for our 11.3 resident artists.

This Thursday, November 17, from 6-8:30, the works of Frank Benson, Graham Fagen, and Jeff Williams will premiere. As always, the opening is free and open to the public. (If you’re an Artpace Fresh Art First Member, you can stop by our Members-only Lounge.)

The Artists’ Dialogue will be moderated by Russell Ferguson, guest curator and Chair of the Department of Art at the University of California, Los Angeles, and it begins at 7pm.

Because it’s only Monday, the opening is three days away, and chances of an NBA season appear slim-to-none, enjoy the wafts of some Monday Postpourri:

  • Miranda Sawyer and Charles Saumarez Smith discuss the museum experience at blockbuster exhibitions. Are hot-ticket shows like the Royal Academy’s 2010 Van Gogh exhibition or this year’s National Gallery’s da Vinci exhibition the best way to enjoy art?
  • Artist, curator and editor Julie Ault stopped by for a chat with the Bad at Sports podcast. In 2006, Ault released Felix Gonzalez-Torres, the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to the artist, which includes the essay “Authority Figure” by IAIR 11.3 guest curator Russell Ferguson.
  • Hans Ulrich Obrist expresses his admiration for Studs Terkel in an interview with ARTINFO.
  • A $1.1 million oops! Martin Kippenberger’s When It Starts Dripping from the Ceiling was damaged at Germany’s Otswall Museum after a cleaning agency employee mistakenly cleaned away the sculpture’s patina she thought was dirt. (pictured at bottom)

Then mark your calendars for November 3, and whet your contemporary art appetite with the release of the Guggenheim’s Cattelan app.

Priced at $3.99, the multiplatform app (iPhone, iPad, Android) will include views of the site-specific installation, a video introduction by director John Waters, a presentation by the retrospective’s curator Nancy Spector, along with more than 20 video interviews, audio recordings of Cattelan, and a preview of his magazine Toilet Paper.
