Chalkin’ in the rain, just chalkin’ in the rain
Everyone warned us here at Artpace it was likely to rain on our parade of chalk art—but that didn’t stop us. After so many months of dry heat with only a few drops here and there to quench our thirst, how could we be mad at the four-day flood that San Antonio received? Instead of canceling our 8th annual Chalk It Up festival, we cheekily defied—and even embraced—the stormy weather.
We adopted the Post Office motto (“neither rain nor sleet…”), but improved it, because we delivered beautiful chalk art to the San Antonio community. Our 10 Showcase Artists, 10 Feature Artists, and 47 Team Works teams battled the rain on their concrete canvases and came out victorious. Thousands of people contributed to the Public Mural. Kids didn’t seem to mind the rain at all as they crafted in the drizzly Kidzone. Even Chalka Khan was able to withstand the elements, producing awesome elliptical chalk designs!
Eating yummy food, listening to music, and viewing amazing chalk art (all while holding a shiny, dripping, red balloon) was never better than in the rain.
