Cut. It. Out.

Local artists, educators, and community members enjoyed an afternoon in the Artpace Student Studio with 04.1 International Artist-in-Residence alum and By Permit Only artist Michael Velliquette for a free Artist Workshop this past Sunday, August 28.

Taking Untitled (Sigil for Wealth and Prosperity)a wheat-paste artwork viewable in the Artpace courtyard—as a point of departure, Velliquette spoke about his artistic process and led everyone through hands-on demonstrations, sharing his techniques and helping participants to develop their own original works. Amidst colorful sheets of textured cardstock and Bristol board, attendees learned how to make simple cuts to create elaborate edges and elements that could be thoughtfully combined to build fantastical 2D or 3D sigils (abstract symbols traditionally used for magical purposes).

The resulting artworks were bright, bold constructions of paper and glue that resonated with the power and potency of personal sigils designed by each individual. Thank you, Michael, for spending the afternoon with us!
