National Night Out

Okay, so traditionally, National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of August. Did you know that, because of our oppressive summer heat, Texas is allowed to postpone our Night Out until October 4—so people will actually venture out of their air-conditioned homes?

Well, here we are. It’s October 4, the weather is mild if not downright pleasant, and communities across San Antonio are congregating in the streets and public spaces TONIGHT for grassroots block parties to heighten crime awareness and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

We consider ourselves good neighbors here at Artpace (and we don’t like to miss a good party), so we’ll be out at HemisFair Park, at the base of the Tower of Americas, tonight from 7 to 9pm, celebrating our community with the Downtown Residents Association, area businesses and organizations, and of course the San Antonio Police Department. There will be food, drinks, music, and we’re providing the art. One of our amazing Chalk It Up Feature Artists, Heidi Myklebust, will be there, creating a scene on the sidewalks (in a good way) in chalk and giving everyone a fun little preview of things to come this Saturday, October 8 at Chalk It Up on downtown Houston Street. Come and meet us!

It would be criminal to miss this. (And by that I mean that if we don’t see you there, we’re going to assume you’re a criminal.)
